South Africa Holiday - Plettenberg Bay

Description

Plettenburg Bay (Courtesy of SATO)

Originally named Bahia Formosa (beautiful bay) by Portuguese explorers, Plettenberg Bay lies beneath the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains surrounded by fynbos, temperate forest and the superb south coast beaches of the Indian Ocean. The resort is conveniently located towards the eastern end of the Garden Route around 125 miles from Port Elizabeth. Apart from its beaches Plettenberg Bay is a major attraction for nature lovers, with over 300 species of birds, popular hiking trails in several national parks and indigenous forests with opportunities to see some of the few remaining forest elephants, and sandy bays frequented by dolphins and seals. Southern Right whales are a common sight in winter and spring as they return to the area for calving.
