South Africa Holiday - Oudtshoorn

Description

Oudtshoorn (Courtesy of SATO)

The Karoo town of Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostriches and known as the "Feather Capital" of the world. Visitors can take a guided tour or even stay on ostrich farms, learning the history of the farms when ostrich feathers were once worth more than their weight in gold. Oudtshoorn is located by the R62 which often forms an attractive inland alternative to the Garden Route over the Klein Karoo to or from Cape Town. Surrounded as it is by mountains all routes in and out of Oudtshoorn follow dramatic and picturesque passes in whatever direction you are heading. Close to Oudtshoorn the enchanting Cango Caves with impressive galleries of stalactite and stalagmite formations are another popular visit on this route.
